Abstract

This essay studies Angelo Decembrio’s Latin panegyric on the death of Charles, Prince of Viana. It first focuses on the relationship between the Italian humanist and the prince. Then, it examines the content of the Latin panegyric, which has received little attention from critics. It also analyses its metrics, lexicon, and sources. Finally, this essay presents the Latin panegyric and its prose translation into Catalan. This linguistic study of the panegyric provides an insight into the life and subsequent legend of the prince.

Author Biography

Raimon Sebastian, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya

Raimon Sebastian i Torres holds a degree in Classical Philology (2006) and a PhD in Latin from the Universitat de Barcelona (2014). He is currently an adjunct professor at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). He is a member of the Sciència.cat research team and the Institut de Recerca en Cultures Medievals (IRCVM). His research focuses on Latin scientific and technical tradition, medieval Catalan translations of Latin agronomy, reception of Latin scientific texts during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and Latin encomiastic poetry in the Renaissance. He has edited and translated Palladius’ Latin work (Bernat Metge 2016).
